Elephant at Belle Vue

Children mount the elephant at Belle Vue Zoo, Manchester in the 1950s. Ken Howarth founder of www.heritagephotoarchive.co.uk has vivid memories of Belle Vue's elephant.
"As a very small boy I was taken to Belle Vue to see the animals including the elephant in the photo. I was about five, and I recall looking up at this giant of an animal. I held out a piece of fruit and suddenly the elephant sucked my tiny hand - up to my wrist - into its trunk. It then tried to lift me with its trunk. There were screams and cries of anguish from me, and shouts from the crowd. The mahout looked down, tapped the elephant's truck with his stick and said something I did not understand and I was suddenly released. An ice-cream soon stopped the tears." c1951
