]]>Paddock Leach was a 17th century house, converted and used to house nursing staff for the Smallpox isolation hospital in Ainsworth was burnt to the ground to remove any chance of infection following the closure of the local isolation unit. 1971.

Its original name was Parrock Leach which means parrock = a small field and leach = attached. (Parish registers & other sources)

]]>Radcliffe Tithebarn dates to at least the 18th century, although the stone base suggests it was much earlier and probably and straight forwardly a barn. It has been various other things including a warehouse, garage and even a mini-supermarket.

On its western side it was attached to a timber-framed Great Hall of which all visible traces have disappeared. The Tower is also associated with various ghosts, and in particular with the ballad of Lady Isabella's tragedy which is a story of cannibalism! SD 795 075 Radcliffe Parish Church is just visible to the right of the image with an unfortunate juxtapositioning of Bealey's bleach works chimney.

On the banks of the River Irwell on the south-west side of Radcliffe Bridge was Taylors Jam Works, later changing its role becoming Pinnington, Dawson and Wood, a chemical works. There was always seemed to be an acrid smell of acetic acid lingering in the air. Looking through the gate you could see carboys of acid. KH Photo 1967

]]>Locally known as 'the bottom of Black Lane" shows life around 1905 or 1906 when the tramways came into being. The buildings in the centre with their lower roof level suggests a much earlier date than the Victorian buildings alongside. Typically this style of building was about 1800-1830. Notive the snadstone blocks or setts that form the road surface.

It would appear that the gaps around sandstone setts in the road are being 'tarred' ready for surfacing. The area in the foreground of the photo appears to have already been surfaced. ]]>The photo taken in the 1950s before the Clean Air Acts shows the terraced housing to the East of St Thomas's Church Tower in Radcliffe from where the picture was taken.

Notice the Crowther's Brick lorry bottom left that had a bright orange livery, also there are two small shops to the right of the photo in the days before supermarkets.

In the background left is the Wilton Spinning Mill and to its right the railway viaduct carrying the Bury to Manchester Electric train Service. Compare with HRS 2833 view after re-development.

]]>The Adelphi Street co-operative society was built on a side road away from the main Radcliffe to Ainsworth Road. Although in this shot the building is occupied by Peter J Hopkinson plumbers merchant, it was once a thriving business. There were plans to develop the eastern side of Radcliffe with housing which never reached fruition. Perhaps that is the reason for its unusual off-footfall location.
