Ulverston Ship Canal, Sliding bridge railway bridge "A unique Survival" perhaps, other than the Hoad monument in Ulverston, this is the most important structure in the area. It is a 19th sliding railway bridge.(c1877) built by the Furness Railway for their new Bardsea Branch line. The decking of the a section of the bridge moved horizontally at an angle allowing small ships to pass up to Ulverston or out to sea. It was hydraulically powered from a nearby accumulator tower that provided horizontal pressure.
