Radcliffe north of Manchester was an important town in the manufacture and finishing of cotton goods.

In 1780 Sir Robert Peel built a water-powered cotton spinning mill at Radcliffe Bridge. Sadly there are now few remains to be seen, the mill having been destroyed by fire in 1851. At low water the weir is sometimes visible, and details can be found by watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFwgxivD43M&feature=share& list=UUxNVGAIh8cokjl555I7xWag that explores various features. There are also photos in the Galleries of the weir.
